GCSE Nightmares

For those of you who didn’t know,or hadn’t worked it out, I go to a private school.

This makes me catagorically Posh, but it also means I have to do really quite well in exams to justify such a stupid amount of money. But unfotunately I’m actually not very clever, and very lazy. So the ludicrous number of A*s I need is seeming less feesable than it would be for, say, someone who has a good work ethic.

I can’t decide whether to aim for a stupid target of straight a*s and be disappointed or expect just enough and be pleasantly surprised (or satisfied). And thinking about it makes me sad, because I just want to enjoy the small amount of time I have before I have to earn money for myself.

Rant Over, for now.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome

Google Chrome

I’m sure everyone will blog about this, but…

Google Crome is amazing. For three reasons: It Simple. Its Quick. Its endorsed by Google.

Its incredibly simple. It feels like a continuation to the desktop, which means that it doesen’t feel incredibly power heavy like firefox does (and is). Although it lacks add ons (notably toolbars and greasemonkey) its opensource which I presume means that these can be added. It gives you full use of the screen without clogging it up with Status bars. The tab system is like Firefox and A T&T Pogo combined.

Its very fast. Evreyone said this to me when I first got Firefox. but I didn’t notice the change. With Chrome, I do. This blog page normally takes 15 seconds to load in FF but in Chrome it took 2 seconds. This could be a result of point one, or it could not, i don’t know (or care).

Its endorsed by Google. And this is good, since I use google for EVERYTHING (mail, reader, calendar, igoogle, gpages). This means that if google want to add a usefuil script to a browser, they’ll now do it to chrome first. The address bar (much like firefox3) gives you a list of previously visited websites but also gives you Google recommended search options which FF3 does not.

I love it. Particuarly because all those smug Maccies and Linuxies can’t use it yet….

Why I want to live in the country….or not

Today, I went to the country.

Wiltshire to be precise. A small town called Tisbury. I do this quite often because all of my family live in the country, so it must have something going for it. I love the country, because it’s peaceful, beautiful and vast simultaneously, and while the city may be the latter, it is neither of the former. Houses are cheaper, Roads are clearer, living is nicer, air is cleaner…. I could go on. I was convinced that I wanted to move to the country

But then it all changed

It Changed, probably whilst I was sitting in the Wild Bean Cafe, staring out into the rain, about 10 miles from Winchester. The Nearest Cinema to my cousins… 10 miles, probably more. Nearest Supermarket….10 miles. Nearest Station…..2 miles – but they’re very lucky. Having lived in London, I think would be impossible to retreat back to the country because, quite frankly, I’d be bored stiff!

Squersh

Not, not really, but thats what the coach called it.

For the past week I’ve given a new sport a try, Squash. This is quite (very) rare for me as I am not ‘The Sporty Type’. Also, everyone who I told about the course said “Ooh Squash, you have to be very fit for that”. “Fit” is not something that I am. So going into the week I was slightly dreading it.

The Week started off easily, easier than I had previously expected. Just practicing drives, volleys, serves and dropshots. I was quite good at these because my arms are quite strong. But they required no movement, so I still did not know what to expect. But the game situation was rewarding as all movements seemed to be short and quick (better than long and quick) and I moved to the ball quite naturally.

That said, I still wasn’t very good, and ended the course as I had begun, the oldest, tallest, strongest and best beginner. A sport to continue trying!

NB I played squash here.

Why I like Jazz?

This week I’m doing a Jazz Course. Its fairly good – I notice that as I do my seventh course the standard gets easier and the pieces start to repeat slightly. But I don’t really mind, because there are always new pieces in with the mix and the nice thing about jazz compared with classical music is that with jazz you can add variety. You can spice up the tune, improvise on chords and go on for as long as you and the rest of the band want to. There’s no set time and no two bands will play any piece the same.

Jazz has got to be the free-est type of music, and the most influencial. Jazz was a key factor in dissolving racism in the USA, the fact theat in Jazz performers were respected equally, both black and white.

Jazz, therefore is the best type of Music.

Fitness to Practice

I have taken delivery of Fitness to Practice the album by Amateur Transplants. For those of you who don’t know, Amateur Transplants is Adam Kay and Suman Biswas, a couple of Doctors from London, who specialize in incredibly funny parodys of fairly famous songs. You can get some form of samples as well as their most famous songs (London Underground etc.) at their website. Its funny, but most of the songs are bitterly disappointing:

Good Paracetamoxyfrusebendroneomycin, Disney Time, Eternal Clerking, London Underground The Drugs Song, Northern Birds

Bad Mr Burton, Snippets

Ugly Your Baby, Finals Countdown,

Updating the website….

Its better than it was, but far from perfect. I’m using a complicated mixture of NFS, Filezilla and Kompozer. Its good fun, but takes really quite a distressingly large amount of time. Its all in html, I’m far too basic for java, and it probably only works in firefox. Anyways, its here. Enjoy!

Check-In Online!…

…But only if you have the reference number. And your credit card. And your surname. And your destination. And you departure airport. And only if you booked through the Airline site, on a Tuesday, in the evening (on a night when Estonia weren’t playing football). And you Bank’s security number and sort code. And you Wikipedia password. And the Date you last Cried. But don’t worry, because they say its “safe”. Completely. 100%.

There is something I like about British Airways, but I just can’t remember what…

Holidays…

Yes its time again. In fact it has been for a while. In fact I’m leaving the hotel tommorow….

I’ve been on my summer hols because my school breaks up disgustingly early. This year my theory of a larger than-5-hour flight leading to a better holiday as been proved…well…wrong slightly. I’m in Crete, which for those of you who don’t know is here and for those of you who do… I’m staying here. The hotel is very comfortable (I hate that phrase), the weather is hot (roughly 33 each day) and I have learned to Monoski and Scuba Dive (the pic is NOT me, but I will upload some, maybe). So overall a good holiday. But slightly confused as to what to do for the rest of the summer, apart from the house party. So any ideas appreciated.

Its on my blogroll, but a newish blog that I like is Time May Change Me.

So long, for now…

A Midsummer Night’s Dream and some Dairy

Its been a while blog….

I’ve had exams, coursework, stroppy teachers but now its starting to wind down. And next week is the play. As the title suggests, its the Shakespeare classic. But I’m no actor. Oh No. I’m a “techie

The set is really good, as is the LX (even if I do say so myself) although I did not design it. I will try and get some pics for this post, so come back in a few hours. It goes on next thursday. Tickets not on sale to the general public, if your reading this and you don’t know me. Otherwise I could probably get you a ticket, though they’re selling fast.

And this week, my tried webapp of the week is: Remember the Milk (please excuse the title)

Its good. Lets call it 4 stars. I like it because the format is good and it links into everything you could want it to. Igoogle, gmail, gcalendar. Its all good. And its helping me already. The one thing wrong with it is that it gets angry when it doesn’t understand – there are few inputs which are just text. So 4 stars it is.

Ciao
